Why a good laboratory design is important for safety.
When designing a laboratory, you should always take into account the safety,
effectiveness and efficiency of the design, every laboratory must be designed with
these three key features in mind and you must pay close attention to all the different
types of safety features that will be needed in the laboratory.
The fire exit is an important part of a laboratory as it is the way out in an emergency,
it is crucial to have signs showing where the exit is so that if there was someone in the
laboratory that had not been there before they would be able to find their way out in
an emergency there should also be at least one reflective or illuminated sign above
the door as people would be able to easy see it if there was to be a fire in the
laboratory which shrouded the laboratory in thick smoke.
When putting safety features in a laboratory remember to put in a fire blanket, these
are used when a fire needs to be smothered. They are normally used when the fire
isn’t too big or too small. These can also provide extra safety if a fire is getting out of
hand as they can use one to put out the fire that is close to them and buy themselves
time to be able to either get the fire extinguisher or to be able to get out of the room
safely.
Another crucial safety feature is a first aid kit; this is normally found in the centre of
the room or in another easily accessible place so that if there was an emergency
everyone can reach it even if they had not been there before, there is also a sign above
it to highlight its place and make it stand out so that it is noticeable to any
worker/employee in the laboratory.
When looking around a laboratory you will always see an eye wash station, this is
normally found in the centre of the room either in its own case or in the same case as
the first aid kit, this is a main safety feature and you will always see one in any
laboratory that works with chemicals or that create any reaction due to the risks
involved if someone was to not wear goggles.
When you first walk into a laboratory you will always see protective personal
equipment this can either be in a cupboard or on the wall, this is normally found
either next to the door or close to the door so that you can grab a lab coat and glasses
as soon as you enter the laboratory instead of walking through the laboratory to grab
them, this is an important safety feature because if the personal protective
equipment was on the other side of the laboratory you might accidently spill
something over yourself and as you would not be protected it could burn your clothes
or skin.
When placing benches in a laboratory you have to think of having space in-between
each bench so that people can easily pass from bench to bench without bumping into
anyone that could cause you or the other person to spill any chemicals on to anyone
or the floor, as it could cause and accident.
When designing a laboratory always make sure that you have more electrical sockets
than you think are necessary as if not enough electrical sockets where in the
laboratory extension leads would need to be used which could trip people up, also if
