Why a good laboratory design is important for efficiency.
When designing a laboratory, you should always take into account the safety,
effectiveness and efficiency of the design, every laboratory must be designed with
these three key features in mind. When you are designing a laboratory you must pay
close attention to how efficient the laboratory and place key features in certain places
that would make the most of the space and make the laboratory the most efficient
place.
Having space in a laboratory is vital for a good laboratory design this can be
accomplished by a variety of different things. When placing workbenches, you must
make sure that they are far apart and that there is enough pace in-between them for
people to walk past is crucial as it is important so that people can easily get around
and retrieve things that they might need having gaps in-between table means that the
laboratory would be more efficient.
Having enough resources in a laboratory design is important as if there were not
enough resources then the laboratory would not run efficiently as there would not be
enough things for everyone to be able to use for example if there was to be an
experiment using enzymes and there were not enough enzyme slides/plates available
there would be a few people not doing anything which would mean that they were
not being productive and that you would be paying them to do nothing at all.
Lighting is always the most important thing when it comes to a laboratory design as
having good lighting means that workers are able to see what they are doing in more
clarity, which would mean that they can focus better when doing experiments this is
cost effective as it means that less mistakes will be made when setting up the
equipment, measuring out the needed samples and when preforming. This is cost
effective as the chance of making a mistake is minimised so this means that you can
save on the cost of resources as you will not need to buy extra.
The temperature in the laboratory important because most resources for example
enzymes and proteins have to be kept at certain temperatures so that they will not be
destroyed and be rendered useless. In a laboratory you can install both a heater and
an air conditioning unit so that in the winter the heat can be turned on and it can be
warmer in the laboratory and during the warmer months in the summer the air
conditioning can be turned on to make it cooler, the advantage of having this is that
the workers will be more comfortable in the laboratory and they will do the work and
not have to take many breaks due to coldness or overheating.
When placing doors in a room the entry doors must be double doors and the fire exit
must be in an easily accessible places. The entry doors must be double doors for ease
of access and entry into and out of the laboratory, the fire exit door must be in an
easily accessible place as if there was an emergency and there was a bench in the way
of a straight line to the door it would slow down the workers trying to get out of the
laboratory which would not be very efficient as they would be slowed down in their
attempt to get to safety.
