Why a good laboratory design is important for effectiveness.
When designing a laboratory, you should always take into account the safety,
effectiveness and efficiency of the design, every laboratory must be designed with
these three key features in mind. When you are designing a laboratory you must pay
close attention to how effective the laboratory will be and place key features in
certain places that would make the most of the space.
When designing a laboratory, you must take into account how much room would be
needed for the equipment that will be needed, having this planned out and placing
the equipment next to each other maximise the efficiency for the laboratory as if all
the equipment was placed in one place which is easily accessible to all of the workers.
They would be able to get the equipment needed as fast as possible, this makes it
both an effective design for the workers and very cost effective as there is no time
wasted looking for equipment.
Storage is a key feature when designing a laboratory as there is a lot that you have to
consider when placing the storage cupboards, for example there needs to be storage
for personal protective equipment. This must be placed near the door for easy access,
putting the PPE near the door is the most effective thing to do as you can grab the
equipment that you need as soon as you walk in, this way you can go straight to
working on the experiment that they may have to do.
Having good lighting in a laboratory is important as workers need to be able to
clearly see what they are doing when they are handling the chemicals. If an accident
was to happen when using chemicals it would put a temporary stop on any
experiments that would be taking place in the laboratory this would not be the most
effective thing to happen as workers would be losing time on their experiments which
would mean that they would have to have extra time to work on them. The most
effective places to put lights in a laboratory is over workbenches or darkened places,
you could also add windows in to let the natural light shine into the laboratory rather
than leaving all the places that need to be light up to the florescent lighting.
Ventilation is important for an effective laboratory design as if there was no
ventilation in a laboratory it would pose a huge health and safety risk as there would
be no clean air in the laboratory only contaminated air, the best way to avoid this is
by either putting in a lot of windows that can open out or by putting in an air filtering
unit to remove the contaminated air and replacing it with clean air.
The placement of the work benches is important for an good and effective laboratory
design, the work benches must be spaced out enough and have all the needed
equipment on them for example electrical sockets and gas taps. They must be spaced
out as if they close together it would decrease the workers efficiency as they would
not be able to freely pass between the workbenches to grab equipment or chemicals.
They must have all the necessary equipment of them as if they did not have them it
would decrease the speed the workers could work at as they would constantly have to
move around to use electrical sockets or gas taps.
