Features needed in a non-specialist laboratory
Gas taps
These are used to provide gas for Bunsen burners, Bunsen burners are used for a
variety of different experiments, they are mainly used for heating substances.
Non-slip chemically resistant flooring
This is an important essential thing in a laboratory, as chemical spills can be easily
moped up and they will not damage the floor, also as they are non-slip they reduce
the risks of accidents after the floor has been cleaned.
Sinks
These are used for washing and cleaning equipment to remove any chemicals that
might be on the equipment. They are also used to wash hands to remove any bacteria
and chemicals that might be left on them.
Laboratory benches
These are high benches designed so that you can stand at them to perform an
experiment, they are also chemically resistant so chemicals will not burn hols into
them if chemicals are accidently dropped on them, being chemically resistant helps
them to be easy to clean due to the protective layer.
First aid
This is an essential in most laboratory’s, it is always kept in open sight so that it can
be easily accessed, there are also signs places around to show where the first ait box
is located.
Storage
In all laboratories there is storage, which is used to store equipment for experiments
for example glass beakers, Bunsen burners and microscopes.
Shut off gas valve button
These are crucial for a laboratory, as if there was a fire this button would be used to
turn off all the gas taps in the room which would reduce the risk of a possible
explosion. It is also very important for the safety of others that might be using the, as
a gas tap might have been left on by accident having the button means you could
press it and the gas flow to that tap would be instantly shut off and there would be no
leaking gas coming from the taps.
Electric sockets
These are commonly found in a laboratory that use equipment that requires
electricity to power it for example a microscope. You will normally find both high and
low sockets for different pieces of equipment.
