In this assignment I will be outlining how an Organisation which is ASDA motivates their employees.

ASDA use bonuses to reward their employees for their hard work and performing really well within the
business, this money is extra free money and It does not affect their wages however tax and national
insurance need to be paid on the bonus. Also the better employees do their work and perform the more
bonuses they will receive which may be an higher amount. This reward system links to Taylor’s
motivation theory as he believes an employer should motivate their employees by using pay and
bonuses as he believes employees are motivated by money and will work better.

ASDA use staff discount to show appreciation to their staff for working for them and working hard and
this staff discount can be used on any products that is sold in an ASDA store and this reward system will
motivate staff to work harder and continue working for ASDA because they know they can use their staff
discount to get products cheaper. This relates to Taylor’s motivation theory because he believes
employees are motivated by pay which relates to staff discount because as employees will get products
for an discounted price they will be spending less.

ASDA use flexible working which is when an employee can choose their start to finish time or having
certain work hours and being able to choose when to do those hours also an employee can choose to
work from home if their job allows them to do that such as an customer service worker they may be able
to reply to emails from home. Also it may be the type of contract they choose which may be permanent
or temporary and flexible working motivates an employee because they will have time to themselves
and their families. They will be able to also do their job and have time at home to do what they need to
do which could be looking after their children or spending time with their family. Herzberg believed that
an employee will be motivated if all the hygiene or maintenance factors are met which flexible working is
a hygiene factor and if employees are given flexible working they will work better. This also relates to
Mayo’s theory because he believes if hours of work are preferable for an employee output will rise.

Health care relates to ASDA because ASDA will cover the cost of an employee’s health care if the
treatment is private, also if an employee falls ill they can go to BUPA to have their treatment privately
and the cost will be covered by ASDA.ASDA also offer vouchers for massages and beauty therapy. This
reward system may help employees to take minimal time off sick, less stress levels and this will motivate
them to come to work and work harder and also employees will be much happier and the employer will
have more hard working employees that come into work often. This refers to Herzberg’s motivational
theory under his hygiene factor because if an employee’s health care is sorted they will be motivated
and well enough to come to work.

ASDA have a contributory pension scheme and this means the employee and employer put money into
the pension scheme and this motivates the employee because they know they do not have to pay all the
money and ASDA is helping them and when they retire they will have money to survive on. Also they
know if they continue to work hard they will not be put redundant and money will still be put into their
pension by ASDA. This relates to Maslow’s theory because he believes the needs of an employee need to
be met, which will be the basic needs met first before the next stage of needs can be focused on. Which
