BTEC LEVEL 3 – INVESTIGATING THE TRAVEL AND TOURISM SECTOR

TASK TWO

Hand out date: 20.10.17

Hand in date: 13.11.17

Criteria: P4

Title: Summarise key developments (from the 1960s onwards) that have shaped the
present day travel and tourism sector.

Introduction

In this task I will summarise and explain key developments made from the 1960’s to present day
which have shaped the current travel and tourism industry. Although people have always travelled,
for some it was their lifestyle, the 1960’s brought the popularisation of the package holiday,
encouraging many families to venture abroad on holidays which now suited their needs and their
budget. The end of the Second World War brought about many changes to the travel and tourism
industry as it was now safer to travel abroad, and advancements had been made relating to pricing,
holiday leave from work, and technology. The annual two week paid holiday was introduced which
encouraged many more people to take the opportunity to travel.

Many more people also bought cars from the 1960’s onwards which allowed them to holiday within
the UK, or on the continent. This increased mobility encouraged shorter, more frequent breaks, and
passenger aircraft were becoming faster, bigger and able to take longer journeys. In the past, long
distance travel was always by sea which was slow, expensive and tedious. After the war, people had
more disposable income which was generally spent on travel, particularly foreign travel. This,
combined which developments in aircraft technology, resulted in the creation of the package
holiday.

While package holidays remain extremely popular today, developments in the industry have resulted
in many more people feeling confident enough to take organising their holidays into their own
hands, such as a backpacking trip, or a self-organised break abroad alone or with friends, family or
with their partner.
