I will be describing the internal and external factors to consider when planning the human resource
requirements of ASDA.

Internal planning factors

Organisational Needs

The higher the demand gets for ASDA’S products and services the more staff they will need in different
departments will be need and in certain roles in order to be able to create these products and sell it to
the customers. If ASDA close their shops they will make people redundant, which means they will need
to keep the stores and keep the staff in order to have employees helping them sell their products and
keep the business running. ASDA provide a service where if a customer needs help with their item such
as an item they can come into the store with it and an employee can help; as the number of the people
needing help with their item is rising ASDA will need more employees in order to help provide this
service.

New products and services

As creating a product and service needs a high amount of time invested into it ASDA will need to do
research in order to make sure the products will be purchased and the service will be used. ASDA will
need skilled employees in order to carry out this research and this is the HR department’s job to find
skilled employees that can help create new products for ASDA and introduce new services. Not only are
employees needed for the research but they also need to sell the products and provide the service; the
employees will need skills such as communication skills in order to explain the products to the
customers, New Employees will need training or existing employees may be trained.

New Markets

If ASDA decide to open an ASDA store in China they will need to recruit people to work for the business
to keep the business running and surviving in the new market; The new employees will need to be
skilled to a high level as this is a new market they will need to impress the new customers in order for
them to keep shopping. Also if ASDA is entering a market such as mobile phones they will need to
recruit employees in order for the employees to know about the product or service and be able to
explain and sell it to the customers also existing employees may already know about mobile phones
such as staff from the IT department however they may need additional training which means ASDA will
not have to hire as many staff.

Technological change

As technology changes it will be easier for ASDA to recruit staff with the skills they want, as there is
internet the HR department can contact potential employees on websites such as LinkedIn which is
professional networking and the HR department will be able to see the skills which the potential
employees have. Also ASDA will need to train their employees to use the technology in their stores such
as self-checkout which customers can use without having to go to an employee to serve them.
