Conflict report: Rio Olympics 2016 (M1&D1)The build-up to the Rio Olympics and the Olympics themselves caused many
issues in the country especially for the locals due to the many negative effects
which occurred due to this. Rio is a city which is well know for theft, crime and
poverty many people live in poor conditions or in slums which is something the
government didn’t want tourists to see due to the bad image it would create. In
order to try and cover this they started building a large amount of facilities,
however 60% of these Olympic buildings were built by private companies using
employees from other countries which meant no local people were employed
and this caused conflict because jobs is something the locals needed as this is
the reason they lived in poverty. The government stated that they did this
because the locals were not trained but they were actually aware the Olympics
would take place a few years in advance which meant they had more than
enough time to provide training and employ the locals and yet chose not to.
Another reason for the conflict was that the government wasn’t actually
spending enough money to try and better the community and help its people but
instead spending millions for one event to take place however the reason why
they did this is because big events bring tourism into the country and help the
economy. In this situation the main conflict is between the locals and the
government.
The Olympics had several more issues another one of them which caused conflict
between the visitors/tourists and the government, safety was one of the these as
many tourists were put into danger, two members who were of the Australian
Paralympic team were stolen from, a New Zealand athlete was also stolen from
after being kidnapped by the local police department and in another incident raw
human body parts were washed up on the shore nearby one of the beach
volleyball sites. Overall this had frightened the tourists and made them feel
unsafe which caused conflict between them and the government. Another issue
was the severe water pollution, during the diving competition the pool was a
nuclear green colour which is a clear indication that something is wrong with the
water, the water used for sailing, rowing and other water sports was also dirty,
this was caused by the raw sewage and large amounts of rubbish flowing from
Rio neighbourhoods directly into the water. When this water was tested to see
how dirty it really was it was found to contain dangerous viruses which were 1.7
million times more hazardous than a beach in the US.
Organisations involved
The organisations involved are each a part of either the private, public or
voluntary sector. The government is the public sector in this cause, their views
are mostly political and they want to Rio to be seen as a great image to tourists
and the rest of the world however they do also have some environmental
objectives as the Olympics will bring a lot of tourism into Rio the government
