Unit 19: Visitor attractions
A visitor attraction is an attraction that is permanently established and has a
primary purpose of either entertainment, interest or education which excludes
shopping centres being visitor attractions. Visitor attractions must be open to the
public for at least part of the year and also will attract tourists and not just locals.
Some of these attractions can be free however it must be feasible for the
attraction to charge some kind of admission. Some popular UK tourist attractions
are; Chester zoo, the Eden project, Alton towers or Windemere lake cruises.

Primary products and services

A primary product or service is the main purpose of the visit for example; the
rides in a theme park. This can change from time to time to attract visitors back
to the location after a period of time such as limited-edition events. A primary
product is the main reason for people visiting however this isn’t always the main
source of income.

Secondary products and services

A secondary product or service is something that adds to the appeal of the
attraction and is the means or revenue, this could be shops, restaurants, parking
or photo opportunities. The benefit of having a secondary product or service at
an attraction is increased customer satisfaction, this also encourages customers
to spend more time at the venue which helps increase dwell time and the
revenue through ‘secondary spend’ which is the money visitors spend on the
secondary products and services.

Additional services

Additional services are things such as guided tours, weddings, corporate or
educational events and room hire. They are services that may be offered by the
venue as an add on.

Visitor services

Visitor services are things such as cloakrooms, parking, toilets and first aid, they
are the facilities that the venue offers for customers to make their visit easier
and more enjoyable.

Purpose built attraction: Warwick Castle
Warwick castle is a purpose-built visitor
attraction because it is man-made and
was built in 1068 out of wood however it
was later developed in 1260 into stone to
make the castle stronger. The castle is the
main primary product/service which
includes the castles famous dungeons,
