- Know it’s one of his earliest plays although we don’t know much as we only know a
few facts about Shakespeare’s life.
- At the time of writing, Queen Elizabeth 1 in power.

Theatre;

- Very popular at the time
- Provided entertainment and education
- All actors were male as it was illegal for women to act
- Therefore young boys played as females so Juliet was played by a young boy.
- 1st theatres just being built during this time so many plays were performed in towns.
- Shakespeare plays were at the Globe Theatre in London
- Replica recently built

Globe Theatre;

- Two acting levels so Shakespeare can add plot devices
- Add balcony scenes
- No scenery
- Characters tell the audience what location actors are in
- References to the moon etc to show it’s the night.

Tragically History of Romeus and Juliet:

- Arthur Brooke
- Written in 1562
- Inspired Romeo and Juliet
- Shakespeare knew it and rewrote it
- Montecchi and Capuletti family lived in Italy and at odds with each other.
- Italian Poem
- Shows basic plot although Shakespeares is livelier and powerful

Shakespeare made changes;

Brookes = Romance for 9 months
Shakespeares = Few days to increase passion and inevitability

Shakespeare:

- Maybe in his 30s
- In love at the time of writing
- Sonnets thought to be written about someone he loved but NOT HIS WIFE
- Therefore he experienced forbidden love
