Diagnostic Framing,(a problem exists) Prognostic Framing, (a solution exists) Motivational Framing (you should get involved) - Philosophy of Mass Society Theorists see mouvements to be avoided. movements occur when a society has lost other intermediary organizations that discontented individuals could join (e.g. “healthy” organizations like labor unions, churches, etc.) -problems to be avoiding -People join movements because they have infantile psychological needs (deviant behavior) - Philosophy of Political Process/Resource Mobilization Theorists (see movements as) Having a legitimate purpose, needing formal organizations to legitimate themselves. There are always discontent people, but opportunities need to arise for them to protest - Philosophy of New Social Movement Theorists (see movements as) Occurring for multiple and complex reasons, needing resources, cultural opportunities, and unique “X factor” circumstances - - Passive Resistance: nonviolent resistance to authority/law enforcement even when the enforcers inflict violence
