the manner in which he rejected the treaty as “arrogant and destructive”

REES- the treaty was a “stunning success for Lloyd George who at a stroke had
taken a giant stride in removing the Irish Question from British politics”
MANSERAGH- Lloyd George got the better of De Valera in his publication of their
correspondence in August 1921, that managed to win over the public opinion and
increase pressure on the republicans

of Sinn Fein, which he used to draw in the delegates, especially Griffith, to ensure
his own political survival
