1. The Quran
When copying a Quran:
• The calligraphy used when copying out a Quran is seen as a religious act because it enhances
the beauty of the gift from Allah
• It takes time and shows devotion
• It preserves the message as the pure text
• Therefore great care is taken when doing this

The act of reciting the Quran:
• Not just with tongue, with head, heart, soul, body and mind = Tilawah

Before reading/touching:
• Wash carefully - Wudu - symbolic wash
• Must be in right frame of mind - niyyah
• Can’t touch if a woman is on her period

Whilst it is being read:
• Must not: speak/eat/drink/touch it unnecessarily
• Usually placed on RAHAL - a stand - never placed on floor
• If holding Muslims will not hold it below navel - effort and respect when holding it

When not in use:
• Placed high up on a shelf - nothing is above it
• Kept covered and free from dust - so kept clean

Worn our Qurans:
• Never thrown away - weighted down and thrown into deep river - shows respect to Allah’s words
• 1994 world cup - Saudi Arabia flag was on mcdonalds takeaway bags with Quran scripture -
problem because thrown away

Learn it off by heart:
• A Hafiz/Hafizah - person who learns Quran by heart and recites it
• Recitation of the Quran by highly stylised reciters called Qari - takes place at major public events

Seen as a miracle:
• Initial revelation was a miraculous event - Night of Power
• Preservation of the book through the ages
• Powerful effect it has - minds, hearts and souls

Quran provides:
• Answers for a Muslim when they need advice and guidance in how to follow straight path
• Contains all fundamental beliefs about Allah

Quran has many names:
• Al Mubarak - the blessing - brings grace to everyone
• Al Shifa - the curer - spiritually healed
• Al Nur - the light - provides the light of knowledge, learning and understanding

Education is important and it begins with the Quran:
• Children as young as 4/5 start to recite
• Children go to Madrassah - school in Mosque to learn Arabic
